Once again another Korean Film “Old Boy” is being remade!

The Vengeance classic, Old Boy (directed by Park Chan Wook), has been for a long time rumored to be remade in America. The last director, that I can remember, that had his name to the project was Justin Lin, Director of Better Luck Tomorrow and Fast and The Furious 3. But now the project seems to be given to the hands of Steven Spielberg. The actor slated to play Oh Dae-su is no other then the famous Fresh Prince, Will Smith. In my opinion, that is an extremely interesting choice of cast. It’s hard to believe that anyone would dare try to approach a film like Old Boy. Part of what made the Old Boy movie a classic was due to the unique Korean culture that elevated the way the film was perceived. It would be difficult to translate that into an American one, albeit not impossible of course. But still I do like the idea of the project being in Steven Spielberg’s hand. And this would definitely bring a different dimension to Will Smith’s acting chop, well that is if he is acting from the original script and not reworked to be Will Smith playing… well Will Smith.

The crew over at FilmSchoolRejects asked Will Smith during the premiere of Seven Pound about his attachment to Old Boy.

FSR: So what is it an adaptation of?

Smith: We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film…”

So it seems that they are taking the original Graphic Novel script instead of the actual Korean Old Boy. We will have to wait a while longer to get the full idea of what is forthcoming to this project. Lets just hope Spielberg and Smith bring their best chops on this movie. I adore this movie, so to see it being raped would be mad retarded.
