Pervy’s Sketchbook #11: George Bridgman’s Complete Guide to Drawing from Life Studies!

Hurray, it’s finally time to dust off my online sketchbook and fibrillate it back to life! Even though I haven’t been posting in a while (Still in need of a large scale 11×17 scanner) I’ve made it a habit to get something down in my sketchbooks everyday, so I’m pretty excited to finally show you guys what I’ve been up to and what new things I’ve learned.

These images you see up-top and bottom are both from my studies on George Bridgman’s book “Complete Guide to Drawing from Life”, and I honestly wish I started studying George Bridgman much earlier in this drawing quest.

For those unfamiliar with Bridgman book, he teaches not only how to draw the figure but also how to ‘see’ it. One of the issues I found about myself before studied Bridgman was that I didn’t really visualize before I marked up my paper. Often times I would think of a pose, then using the anatomy I already knew, I would draw one body part at a time, but in the end all my figures would seem stiff and more often then not, constipated.

Once I started drawing every figure in Bridgman book, I slowly began to see each shape of the muscles, and how the body has a natural flow to it that keeps it from looking stiff.
