Pervy’s Sketchbook #13: Skull & Head Studies w/ Some George Bridgman!

Ah, the humble skull. When it comes to drawing faces be it realistic or stylistic, learning what is underneath the skin is essential to drawing proportionately correct faces.

Honestly, faces are one if not the hardest parts of the body for me to draw.  If you get one part of the face wrong, even if it’s a slight shift of  the eye or nose, the features will stick-out like a hungry baby banging you with a slobbery pacifier (ugh).

What’s even worse is when you draw a face and see that there is something wrong with it, but don’t know exactly how to fix it.  This is when learning the skull really helps you out, it may not necessary help you draw beautiful faces but it will at the least help you more with getting the proportions correct, which is really the most important.

For these studies I simply googled up some skulls and scanned through my art-books for their skull sections, then went on to draw them from imagination while going back to the skulls I didn’t thoroughly understand.
