Pervy’s Sketchbook #6: Drawing Life w/ Arnold Schwarzenegger!

Ah, back to old Mr. Sketchbook for more ‘art’! In this entry I decided to show you guys some more of my life sketches, but this time with my blue lead since I just thought it looked so sexy.

Now if you guys were like me, you may have some trouble figuring out where you should start drawing from life and give the lame excuse of “Oh I would but I have so much ‘reference material’ that I don’t know where to begin!”. Don’t you worry, I said the same exact thing.. Sorta.. Well, here’s some tips that helped me get on the right foot that might work for you!

When your looking for reference material for life drawing, I find it helpful if you learn from one person at a time. Not that drawing random people all at once is wrong, but it’s more effective if you first get the understanding of how one person’s body is shaped first. In other words, find a photo album of the person you want to learn from and keep doodling how they pose until you get a general idea of how their body is shaped at all angles. Once you get that down you can move on to the next person with a different or similar body type and see how that person’s body differs.

Alright, I have to admit I spent most of my time searching up female models to draw, but again it is crucial to learn from different body types even if you fear the thought of googling up “Muscly men” or “Fatty on a boat”. Ugh, It’s horrible I know. If you have to much fear of the unknown then search up celebrities that you know have a certain body type you want to learn from, that way you wont have to be bombarded with the internet’s deadliest jewels.. Hopefully. In my case *points to above picture* I just googled up Arnold Schwarzenegger. He’s clean, I assure you.

Last but not least is some just going with the flow. Use what you learned on your own drawings or keep learning from your reference material and see how you can maneuver their bodies to your liking but still staying anatomically correct. Keep in mind that you can’t practice to much when it comes to life drawing.. Especially if your using your own personal collection of ‘reference material’.. There’s just no excuse!
