The Apple iPhone & iPod Touch has been quite popular for some time now, with thousands of apps available for the system, it goes to show that it’s indefinitely the largest platform for applications than any other mobile device. Though, with all of these different apps, and tools, it can become a bit confusing as to what applications does what it does best. Being a app crazy iPhone user myself, I’ve tested hundreds of the highest quality applications the platform has to offer. Now, I’ve compiled some of the top best, if not, must have, applications so far!
In this compilation of the top iPhone, and iPod Touch applications, I’ll be recommending some of my favorite game the App Store, has in store! Also, to try and keep things unbiased toward a specific genera, I’ll try my best to recommend games of a variety of different categories. (Feel free to recommend your own favorite apps, along with your opinions, so others can make their own decisions on which apps they should look into.)
~Top iPhone & iPod Touch Game Applications~
The apps listed are in no particular order. Also, these apps have been recorded on June 1st, so changes in prices or details may differ.
The Treasures of Montezuma $1.99 & Bejeweled 2 $2.99
(Montezuma on the left, Bejeweled to the right.)
Everyone should have a casual/ addicting game to play around with. Bejeweled, and Treasures of Montezuma does just that, with quick matching of 3 or more colors for more points to ultimately advance to the next level.
Bejeweled, as I’m sure most of you know, is a game where you match jewels until there is no more moves possible. Simple, and addicting especially when you ask 1-2 of your friends over to help you scuffle through the levels quicker. If yours someone who just loves to take a quick break from your day at work & home, this is a great addition to your game roster.
Treasures of Montezuma on the other hand, is for those who want a more hardcore matching experience. The object to the game is to destroy all the treasures with jewels in the center before the time runs out, so you can advance to the next level. The game also has an additional upgrading system, where as you advance through the series of levels, you can upgrade different bonuses or totems, that assist you in completing the level. Personally, Treasures of Montezuma is much more addictive then Bejeweled, but with that, it can also be that much more frustrating for others.
Heavy Mach $0.99
Side scrolling games are a dime a dozen in the App store, but there has been few to none, that could match up to quality of Heavy Mach.
Heavy Mach is essentially a side scrolling shooter where you control a tank, destroying a series of different mechanical baddies. As you advance through the levels, you gain experience points as you destroy your enemies, letting you upgrade different features of your tank. Such as: Movement, Defense, and Attack. And, like most side scroll shooters, you pickup new weapons, and bonuses as you go, letting you have a array of different weapons in your arsenal. If your looking for a great shooter, this is a winner for sure. And, at the price of $0.99, it’s pretty much a steal!
Fieldrunners $2.99
Probably one of the most time consuming games you will ever play is right here. Fieldrunners is so addicting with it’s upgrading & building system, you’ll find yourself losing track of time as you get sucked into the gameplay.
The concept of the game is to keep the enemies from passing through to the other side, once a certain number of them pass through, it’s game over. Your job is to create a artillery of different towers that will make short work of the little runner. Whether it’s building a barrage of towers, or pimping out the ones you already have, the game is heavily strategic on what you choose to do. Definitely one of the best strategy game the iPhone, and iPod Touch has to offer.
Virtual Villager: A New Home $4.99 & The Lost Children $1.99
(A New home on the right, The Lost Children to the left.)
Ever wonder how it would be like if you could create your own village? Well, now you can, with the world of Virtual Villager! At the moment, there are 2 Virtual Villager games out: A New Home, and The Lost Children.
A New Home is the first installment of the series, consisting of a much cuter and visually attractive interface/ appearance. The game is also quite humorous as you mess around with them. The Lost Children on the other hand, is a more complicated, and difficult experience, but has more things to do (arguably), than A New Home.
The idea of both games is to keep your villagers alive. The only way you lose is when all your villagers are the same gender, there is one villager left, or when all your villagers pass away. To keep this from happening, you’ll have to spend some time searching for resources such as food, and continue to advance in technology to keep your village striving. What makes these games unique and fun, is that even when you are not playing, the villagers continue to live and work. Thus, means no matter what your doing, your villagers are always doing something, though leaving them all alone for a long period of time will often lead to their death, since they ultimately need your guidance. A perfect game for those who love to pop in and out of reality to help our your virtual village friends.
Zombieville USA $1.99
Now, no game list would be complete without a zombie game in it somewhere! Zombieville USA is the perfect remedy of zombie bashing & decapitating.
You play a lone person, in a world filled with zombies chasing you for no apparent reason. The more zombies you kill the more money you get, and as you advance through the levels, the zombies grow more difficult to kill, but also give you more money to spend. With the money you earn you can spend it on upgrading your arsenal with everything from shotguns to a plasma cannon. The game is simply fun and addicting, where survival of the hordes is another path leading to an inevidible death.
Vanguard Storm $4.99 & Crystal Defender $7.99
(Vanguard Storm to the right, Crystal Defender to the left.)
Square Enix has always had their way in either advancing into a already successful gameplay concept, or making their own original experience. With their releases of Vanguard Storm & Crystal Defender, that concept has yet to change.
Crystal Defenders uses the concept behind strategic games such as Fieldrunners, where you defend yourself from a horde of monsters trying to reach the other side. You basically place diff rent characters at different areas on the map, so they can keep the monsters from passing through. As you defeat a monster, you gain currency to spend on leveling up your characters, or making more to defend yourself.
Vanguard Storm, works in a completely different original idea, where you first choose a party of characters, and you spend your time defending your side of the field from having the enemy passing. You gain the opportunity to recruit more characters to join you as you progress through the waves of monsters.
DinoSmash Online $0.99
Now for something you competitive iPhone/ iPod Touch users can engage yourselves in.
DinoSmash Online is a free for all deathmatch game where you are a dinosaur with a whole closet full of guns, and weaponry to smash other real players like yourself with. You’ll need a Wifi connection to play, and there is no offline game mode, so this is strictly for those who want a fun competitive experience. And, being only $0.99, it’s a great deal for hours of fun.
World of Tunes $1.99
Now, for one of the most unique games from the App store. World of Tunes is a game that takes rhythm, quick reaction, and a enjoyment of cute & catchy music.
“The adorable Tuneys bounce into aerobatic action as you tap along according to the rhythmic music.
Full screen touch controls immerses you in a fully interactive adventure.
Fun for all ages with easy to learn controls
Various types of beats from indigenous music to electric piano music”
In other words, Tuneys (the creatures that look that notes) will pop up on the screen, and your job is to pop them by tapping them according to the rhythm of the music. How you win or lose is similar to the way you lose or win in games such as guitar hero, where the bar increases as you tap more Tuneys, and goes down as you miss or tap them to early/late. This is a game that does everything right, everything from the music to the interface of the game is fine tuned to work well together. This is a must have for those who love rhythm games.
Defend Your Castle $0.99 & StickWars $0.99
(StickWars on top, Defend Your Castle on bottom.)
Want a game that is so addictive and fun, that your fingers will actually burn your hands out? Well, these two games: StickWars, and Defend your Castle, is the perfect choices for you.
What you do in both games is keep the stick people from destroying your castle. To do this, you simply touch and drag the stick people up and watch them as they splatter as they come back to the ground. As you continue through the game you can upgrade your castle, or convert stick people to work for you.
Both StickWars, and Defend Your Castle, are great games, around the same premis. But depending on your preference, the one you choose is up to you. I personally play Defend Your Castle more, since the visual look is more attractive, and the quality of the game is superior in my opinion.
CozyQuest $4.99
If your looking for an MMORPG to immerse yourself in, than CozyQuest is one of the best out there.
Unlike most of the MMORPG’s of out there for the iPhone/ iPod Touch, this is one that doesn’t deal with you wasting your time having to add hundreds of random codes, or have to spend more of your real cash so you can have some of the better equipment. CozyQuest is more indepth in getting you to make choices and really develop your skills, instead of making money off you.
Everyday the game is updated, and you can see what is being worked on in one of the town facilities. You can also talk to other players publicly in a chat room, whether it’s casually or for advice. In a nutshell, CozyQuest, has all you would want in a pocket sized MMORPG, that 95% of the other MMO’s fails to do.
Chronicles of Inotia $2.99 & Zenonia $5.99
These are for you RPG fans who are looking for a new adventure to venture through. The Chronicles of Inotia is a decent role-play game with some things gives you the bare essence of a RPG, but does it without much immersion. But for the price, the game gives you what you expect. Zenonia on the other hand is far superior in all categories. Whether it’s storytelling, gameplay, and controls.
Zenonia is quite possibly the best game I’ve seen so far in the App store. With it’s immersing storyline, filled with forth wall humor, and game mechanics that brings back the classic feel of what role-playing games were like. This game is a must have for every core gamer, even more so if your a RPG fan, as long as your willing to pay for the game’s price.
