An interview with Zipper Interactive has been conducted for their latest FPS game, Massive Action Game (AKA MAG). The interview deals with the architecture of the making of the game (along with the potential it holds).
It is stated to be one of few (if not, only) multiplayer FPS game made to be played with 256 different human players at one given time. Though, with the severe size of the multiplayer, parts of the game were sacrificed in quality, such as graphics.
Another other flaw that I could imagine is that, having 256 players at one given time is bound to have some problems, whether its finding the people to fill those spots (not necessary all 256 spots, but a majority of it), or that the server will have some pretty bad problems with latency/ping for the individual players.
FPS games today are always having lag problems, and those are majorly anywhere from 2 players to 50 player games. Just imagining 256 players at once is almost a doomsday of a lag fest (or even worse, spamming). It’s also only to be released for the PS3, which, at the moment, is one of the systems with the least number of users, which of course leads to more problems filling those spots (Without being so far from the host server themselves, that the game doesn’t become unstable).
